I started studying for my CPEN exam exactly 1 month before my scheduled test date. I used only this book, nothing else. There are 4 test in the book each 150 questions long. I would take a test in the book and then go over all the rationals for that test. Even the questions I got correct I would read the rational because sometime you would learn information from reading why the other answers were wrong. I made high 60's and low 70's on each test. (also please don't be discouraged if you make a worse grade on the 4th test then your others. The 4th test was definitely the hardest) I then took only 1 of the online test which are 175 questions each and have a time limit of 3 hours. This is exactly how the actual CPEN is set up. On that test I made a 72. The day before the test I did absolutely nothing nursing related. I made sure I was off that day and I took my son to the water-park. I didn't study @ all!!! On the actual CPEN I passed and had 137/150 questions correct (even though its 175 questions long they don't grade the 25 pre-test questions) and it took me approx 2 hrs and 45 min. (I'm a very slow test taker, other nurses I know who took the test said they were only in there for about 2 hours) I felt very prepared going into the test and I can only remember 1 question on the actual CPEN that I had absolutely no clue about. I feel like that's really good considering how complex pediatric emergency nursing is. I would highly recommend this book for studying and the online tests that comes with this book are great as well. GOOD LUCK!
The title of this book is misleading. It should just say “practice testsâ€. Anyone who has studied for the CEN knows the review book is just that, reviews system by system with a practice test at the end. The CPEN review book has 4 practice tests, each test has 150 questions with rationales. Nothing is broken down by system. Per the BCEN website, they recommend reviewing PALS, ENPC, and a nursing textbook.I’m currently studying for my CPEN and CCRN-Pediatrics exams.I highly recommend purchasing the CCRN-ped online review if you’re looking for a more focused way to study. Also, I recommend CPEN review by Scott DeBoer if you’re looking for practice tests. There’s 1,000 questions with insightful and sometimes lighthearted humor in the rationales.Don’t waste money or time with this over priced resource.
Great presentation of information in test format. 150-question tests with answers and rationales. Also has a CD that will bring you to the website. The online tests are what are in the book, but it acts like the real test and scores at the end. Wonderful resource for CPEN. I haven't taken the test yet, but two friends have that passed with this book...
Gave this book "2 stars" since some of the explanations were either unclear or confusing. Rationales used a lot of medical jargon - which we're supposed to know as medical professionals - but does not help at all in remembering the concepts. The book came with a CD, but the subscription is only good for a year; after that it costs around $90.00 to see the online version of the questions.Prefer Scott De Boer's book, hands down.
This is the only book I used to study. I did not do any classes or use any other material. I did the practice tests and just went over the answers I got wrong. I passed the CPEN with an 84% on my first try.
Intensive but Comprehensive Review of Key Concepts from the Core Curriculum. The rationales given for every answer listed for all the questions helps you understand why the bolded answer is the correct one.
I'm currently using this book to study for the CPEN exam. There are a total of three full length exams in this book that mimic the actual CPEN exam. The questions are actually more difficult than other review books that I have been using. The explanations are fantastic and in depth and also explains why each of the wrong choices are incorrect, which is really great for learning. The accompanying online program however is just a repeat of the same exact questions from the book, but in a mixed order. That was a bit disappointing, as I had hoped that there would be tons of more questions on the program. But no other complaints. Now let's hope I pass this exam!
Great study review! Haven't taken the test yet but I love to read and review material to keep me fresh and up to date w/ pediatric ER care.
