A deep yet readable analysis of today’s world through the lenses of interaction (or lack thereof) with the other. It puts into words and very well written phrases the why and how behind a world where we all seem to continually attract and be attracted to those who look and think like us, rather than finding and celebrating Others. He brings in numerous philosophical and literary traditions to build his arguments in a helpful way that shows how this is a continuation of other factors.My one critique: I wish he would cite more non-Western thinkers and bring his own multi-cultural experience in.
5 stars easily. This book really dives into how technology and hypercommunication has created insane levels of isolation..all of which is a byproduct of a neoliberal society that only cares about productivity. There are solutions there, if we're willing to take that step. Either way, a brilliant book that isn't a long read or difficult to understand. Highly recommend.
The "Expulsion of the Other" was required text for a communication ethics class. The concept is easy to understand but it felt as if Han was trying to go deep just for the sake of going deep. I do not doubt the Han has a deep depth of knowledge. I just do not understand the need to talk in circles. At times it came off a bit pretentious. I wanted to enjoy the book but I did not.
Mind opener to our reality, great take on the current direction society is heading.
