I purchased "Living Book Press" version. And it is unabriged, but all the photos are in grayscale--complete black and white. :/ The text is a good size, the cover is nicely bound, the font is pleasant. But the pictures are not color.I have also purchase the $0 Kindle version and there are no pictures at all. So while the living book press is a step up from nothing, I wish I could find the version with beautiful color pictures!
Ahhh Burgess books. They are classics. These books are filled with facts about animals, written in story form. True "living books." They have substance, which many modern books for children lack. I loved reading these when I was a kid, and have enjoyed reading them with my children. Great for kids that love animals and great literature!
This is advertised as a color edition. I was so excited to find am one with color illustrations, but not all of the illustrations are in color. For what I paid, compared to the black and white copies, I expected more.
Bought this after finding and reading the Burgess Bird Book with my daughter. Even though the pictures aren't as great as the 100 year old classic Bird book, we have really enjoyed it. I love how Peter travels through and learns about the animals and we learn right along with him. Great book for the kids.
I would have loved to give this book 5 stars but the pictures were only black and white and not the vibrant colors that I had expected. I had the bird book from the library and the pictures illustrated were fantastic so I purchased this thinking they would be the same.
This is a book recommended by the Simply Charlotte Mason homeschooling website. It is full of "living" stories for children about nature and the outdoors. Its a perfect book to teach narration to younger children and the stories are engaging enough to hold the attention of a budding reader. Orignally published in 1920, it is a classic with homeschoolers around the world. The illustrations, pen and ink drawings by Louis Agassiz Fuentes, do not anthropomorphize the animals. They are shown in their natural habitats, very simply but full of detail. The book arrived on time and was well packaged with two other books
What's not to love? It's a science lesson hidden in a story about animals. The kids look forward to hearing about Old Mother Nature schooling these woodland animals. A cool approach to teaching kids about animal biology.
My 7 and 10 year old have enjoyed this book. It is a fun way to learn about the animals around us. We did couple this with a free LibriVox recording at times and pulled additional online pictures and video to bring the animals more to life.
