I feel like I discovered a Picasso painting in my attic. I had never heard of Evison before reading this novel, and now I wonder how I ever missed him. If you're like me, you'll think that you've been reading this book for 30 minutes only to discover that it's 2:00 A.M. and you've been reading for three hours.On the surface, Evison's writing appears simple, until you start recognizing that he is painting beautiful images and evoking a wide range of emotions. This book could have been a maudlin mess of melodrama in the hands of a lesser writer, but Evison manages to avoid this while presenting a very emotional work. His characters undergo an Odyssey that I was extremely willing to go along with.Lastly, I will say that this novel also has comedy liberally interspersed throughout the narrative that oftentimes created a belly-laugh for me. I will be reading more of Evison's work and I hardily recommend him to you.

Contemporary American literary fiction is overflowing with deadbeat protagonist losers and shlimazels who dig themselves deeper and deeper into their own spiritual mire and vomit. I thoroughly dislike most of them. This is one of the very few novels which pulls it off deftly, with style, pathos, and humor. It's filled with insights which are eminently relatable, even if your life isn't falling apart (yet).The movie version rearranges and adds story elements which I kind of wish were in the book. But both are satisfying in their own way. I will read more of this author.

Call me sentimental but I LOVED this book. Based upon the quickly crumbling life of Humbert Humbert, ooops, I mean the equally curmudgeonly (though much younger) Benjamin Benjamin, the novel becomes part Little Miss Sunshine, part Garden State. Our narrator takes to the road in a Handicapped Van with his "side-kick," Trevor who suffers acutely from Muscular Dystrophy. To Evison's credit, he does not romanticize Trevor's condition nor does he attempt to make his suffering a metaphor for anything but itself---senseless, deep and mostly meaningless suffering. The descriptions of Benjamin's time spent tending to Trev's various bodily limitations are clinical and direct. At times, however, I wished that Evison had kept up with the clinical detail during the road trip since it seems that traveling with Trevor was supposed to be part of the gauntlet.At the heart of the book, however, is the shared goal of the caregiver and the patient to find meaning. Benjamin's body works just fine, but due to an accident of which we learn in fits and starts throughout the novel, he is dystrophied emotionally and psychologically, and once we learn the full horror story of his tragedy, we realize that we would probably be in his condition as well. Because the writing was so good and the characters sympathetic, I was willing to forgive the derivative nature of the van ride across the country and the very obvious Garden State symbol of stopping/finding redemption at one of America's deepest holes (literally). I read this book to buy time while my wife finishes up Jonathan Tropper's new novel (which she swiped before I could); I am thrilled I read it and I'm glad to discover a new strong voice in American fiction.

With a theme of dealing with loss/regrets and moving on, The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving is in part an “unlikely buddies” story. The pair consists of a teenager with muscular dystrophy, Trev, and his caregiver, who has the unlikely name of Benjamin Benjamin. They eventually take a road trip from Washington State to Utah, and along the way meet an assortment of characters, including two rather pathetic fathers. Ben, the narrator, is pretty pathetic, too; he’s stuck in a low-wage job, has no prospects for the future, is in the process of getting divorced, and has a terrible tragedy in his past.This novel reminded me of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, by Rachel Joyce, which I also enjoyed. In that novel, Harold also had a tragic past, and also met a variety of people on his journey (although he traveled on foot). Also like The Unlikely Pilgrimage, in The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, the author uses a literary device that at times I find annoying: in order to build the story and/or create some conflict, he withholds pertinent information about the protagonist’s past from the reader. The narrator, of course, knew the entire history and could have revealed the story of his tragedy from the very beginning. The process of doling it out in dribs and drabs through a series of scenes from the past does at times bother me; I want to say “Just tell me, darn it!”That said, despite the rather depressing themes, it's a fun read. I enjoyed the interaction between Ben and Trev, which was often very funny, although you might appreciate it more if you've ever been a teenaged boy yourself. I also liked the fact that Trev is portrayed not just as a cripple, but as a real person with a personality, shortcomings, and strengths of his own. And while the ending was realistic, I have to say I didn’t like it very much. Overall, though, I still liked it enough to give it four stars.

What they don't raise (lamb, beef, apples) comes from local farms. Come winter, they feast on root crops and canned goods, menus slouching toward asparagus. Along the way, the Kingsolver family, having given up industrial meat years before, abandons its vegetarian ways and discovers the pleasures of conscientious carnivory.This field—local food and sustainable agriculture—is crowded with books in increasingly predictable flavors: the earnest manual, diary of an epicure, the environmental battle cry, the accidental gardener. Adult/High School–This book chronicles the year that Barbara Kingsolver, along with her husband and two daughters, made a commitment to become locavores–those who eat only locally grown foods. This first entailed a move away from their home in non-food-producing Tuscon to a family farm in Virginia, where they got right down to the business of growing and raising their own food and supporting local farmers. For teens who grew up on supermarket offerings, the notion not only of growing one's own produce but also of harvesting one's own poultry was as foreign as the concept that different foods relate to different seasons. While the volume begins as an environmental treatise–the oil consumption related to transporting foodstuffs around the world is enormous–it ends, as the year ends, in a celebration of the food that physically nourishes even as the recipes and the memories of cooks and gardeners past nourish our hearts and souls. Although the book maintains that eating well is not a class issue, discussions of heirloom breeds and making cheese at home may strike some as high-flown; however, those looking for healthful alternatives to processed foods will find inspiration to seek out farmers' markets and to learn to cook and enjoy seasonal foods. Kingsolver invites us to her family's garden and table as they spend a year eating pretty much only what they or people they know in their area grow. I first read this years ago thanks to a book club suggestion, and I keep recommending it and buying more copies for friends who are interested in knowing more about sustainable living. The format works -- Kingsolver writes the main narrative, with her husband writing sidebars for facts and figures of the big picture of American agribusiness and her daughter writes recipe sidebars -- that are good, too! Chew on this book for a while, and you'll find yourself making different and more informed choices about your own food -- and, as Stephen assures us in one of his sidebars -- even one local meal a week for every American family would decrease fossil fuel use and increase local farmer -- and your own family's -- health.

I have been a fan of Barbara Kingsolver for years. I am amazed that this book slipped under the radar for me 10 years ago. I am so glad I just newly discovered it just a month ago. I have a great grandfather whose family were multigenerational farmers on the outskirts of Rome for many years. They were one of many small farms who did and still do feed Rome with low intensity “hand made” food production. I am an urban architect in San Diego and am now trying to incorporate small scale urban farming to some of our new projects so the next generation can understand where there food comes from. These are net zero, affordable housing and projects from a fossil fuel standpoint. This book is a perfect resource for my projects.

This was a wonderful book that will change the way you look at food, how it is grown, processed, transported and satisfies our nutritional and emotional needs.

I didn't think I'd like this book, but I should have known that Ms Kingsolver would rise to the occasion. I truly enjoyed the tongue in cheek criticism of urban dwellers who don't know where their food comes from especially since I was one. Since moving to my parent's farm in my near thirtys then having to move away I have come to miss the farm life and the peace and security of being able to walk out your back door and feed yourself.Thank you for reminding me of probably the best times of my life.

I borrowed this book from the library initially, our CSA was having a February "book club" read, and this was the book. My husband and I have gardened to one extent or another since we married almost 40 years ago, and he grew up on a working farm. When our 30 something children were young we had 3,000 square feet under cultivation in vegetables to eat, freeze, can, sell to the local food co-op and give away.Now we're on our second round of children. We are older, tired and we'd moved away from our fertile loamy soil to sand, acidity and bands of marauding white-tailed deer. We hardly gardened the past 3 years.Then we found this incredible, life altering book. Actually, the book is not incredible. Barbara Kingsolver's lyrical prose, written with wisdom, humor and truth, was able to bring my husband and I back to the path that led to the local farmer's market, a local CSA (community sustainable agriculture)and gardens of our own again. Her words, and those of her daughter and husband, brought us back into the kitchen, they brought us back to the table, together again as family, to prepare and eat meals together, to talk, to be happy and to be relaxed with one another.We were able to get the book on CD Animal, Vegetable, Miracle CD, and my husband and I listened to it every evening, enraptured with every chapter, every story, every success and every failure. We felt as though we were living through the Kingsolver family's year of local food and living with them. As the story progressed, so changed our family. We started baking bread again with this fun book Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day: 100 New Recipes Featuring Whole Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, and Gluten-Free Ingredients ordering organic, locally grown and produced meats, poultry, vegetables and fruit from local growers through the West Michigan Food Co-Op and even going together with other friends to order organic grains and legumes in bulk through a local distributor.I could write forever the ways this book has changed our family, really fundamentally changed the way we think about food, our local farmers, our earth and sustainability and our community. Much of what we learned, we knew already, but in disjointed news-bites and fragmented memories of our young married (gardening) life. "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life" gave us new facts, refreshed old ones and pulled all the information into a beautiful story book, a wonderful primer for living. Thank you to Barbara and her family for showing us the way.Additional Note: I've purchased copies of the book for my boss, my adult children, siblings and myself since that first copy I read was from the library!

This book is a story of the transformation of one family from a supermarket driven life to the life of a locavore, celebrating local food, eating in rhythym with the seasons and relishing the changing bounty of the land. I know a lot about growing my own food, sustainable eating and am spoiled by the glorious bounty of the Bay Area in Northern California. Had I read this book years ago when it first came out this might be a 5, but now I give it three stars, the concept is good but it lacks focus, leaving out the recipes we crave that would make real the beauty and depth of locally sustainable flavors. There is a choppiness to the narrative that lessens its power. I appreciate the concept, but I find myself wishing this book had been more of what I wanted, a vehicle to make me ache with all my heart for the possibilities I feel looking down at local vegetables on my kitchen counter and my heart opening to a world of memory and possibility.

We can all be glad for that! While the results of the studies are no surprise to any dog lover, it is interesting to learn how these results were scientifically obtained. The book seemed slow until about the mid point.

At the age of 55 I began my first ever love affair with Jackson. He was a 12 week old Golden puppy and he took my heart completely into his keeping the day he rode home on my lap from the breeder. We had a good life and at the age of 12 1/2 he left for the Rainbow Bridge. That final day, in the comfort room at the vet, I sat in the floor, face to face with him looking into his eyes as he looked into mine. There I saw reflected tenderness, a little bit of fear and resignation but still the unbridled bond/love we shared. I loved him even more in that moment than I ever had, and he knew it. He laid down, head in my lap and closed his eyes and went peacefully on his way.It's been three months since that day and I have prayed every day that he truly knew how much he meant to me.Gregory Berns' recount of the Dog Project has given me great insight into the whole love affair I had with Jackson, and has assured me that all those moments of eye contact and caressing were truly reciprocal. The work is a great discussion of how it 'happens' with humans and their pets, especially dogs. There were times during the reading that I wanted less discussion of the science of fMRI and wanted to get to the real answer of my question, "Did Jackson love me?" In the end, however, even though it is a lengthy discussion of how the whole MRI process works and how it is applied scientifically, it was an 'easy to read and consider' recap, and it made perfect sense why the discussion was necessary.If you love a dog, read this book and find out how to glean even more of the euphoria you experience when the love from him or her begins to show. You are not crazy. You are not imagining it. You can make it even bigger and better if you understand "why."I thought never to have another dog. How could I surpass this past perfection? Now, I'm not so sure. What if I could do it again and make it better? I wept again in my grief. Now I rejoice in the respect and love that Berns and his family share with their pets and appreciate all the efforts, care and concern the team displayed in the whole project process.Thanks for telling me.

I read this book but I knew the answer to the above question for years. I have no doubt that they do. I also have first hand knowledge of service dogs as I have one. Most people see my dog & doubt his capabilities. Why, you ask? Because he is a 3 1/2 pd poodle. My medical condition is such that I have attacks similar to seizures. Given enough notification I can ward off my attacks with an anti-seizure medication. I originally got my dog as a pet but when he was 5mos old he started telling me before had when I was going to have an attack. It took me a couple of months to realize a correlation between what he would & what happen to me within 30 min or so. From what I understand it is difficult to train a dog to recognize these type of symptoms because the attacks are as a result of a chemical imbalance that is different with each individual. My dog is a poodle which some people think are "yippy" dogs. My little boy is the exact opposite of that. He almost never barks but when he does I pay attention. He will start with a small yippy and get more insistent until I show him my medicine bottle and tell him I took my meds. I've had animals all my life and never doubted the connection between us but my little dog takes it to a higher dimension. And like Callie in this story he seems happier when he's on duty. He takes.his job seriously and never lets me out of his sight for more than a few minutes.This book proves what most dog owners have said for a long time. It is a fantastic book to read without to much technological jargon but it has enough, after all this was a scientific experiment. I would highly recommend this.book to all. The information it contains is very informative and well written. Try it, you won't be sorry especially if you are a dog person.

I agree with the other reviewer that the title is misleading, the book is a yawner, and the conclusions drawn are simple extrapolations beyond the technical findings and expertise of the author. The title would leave you to believe that you're finally going to learn how (and understand how) dogs "think", and that they have legitimate human-like emotions. Maybe they do to some degree, but this books makes no sound case for that conclusion. 90% of the book is about training the dogs to get into the MRI machine and keep still, and the last 10% is a maudlin commentary on the death of one of the author's dogs. I am a dog owner and dog lover and I love my dog and he gives me unconditional love in return. Whether he "thinks" love in his mind is irrelevant to me - he is always happy to see me, loves to be close to me, loves my touch, and believes he should go everywhere with me (which as a therapy dog, he does). I was really hoping for some emotional and logical breakthrough in helping me to understand what goes on in his dog brain, but this book, to me, falls far short of that mark. Very disappointing.

As such, this text is an excellent follow up that adds some much needed detail to this process. This book builds on the earlier book. The methodology used is the same and a reader of the earlier book will appreciate how both books complement each other.Another key strength to this book which sets it apart from all others in the field is the approach it takes to actually test the effectiveness of a physical security system. A major plus is how the author tackles both qualitative and quantitative approaches to test the effectiveness of the system. The key is testing. The author presents the methodology in a clearly understandable fashion and provides detailed explanations of all formulas and charts used. This is a very user friendly book, but one that has great depth.I honestly feel this book will become an instant classic. It will become the benchmark by which other security books will be measured. Generally, the author's writing style is quite effective, with colorful language and logical structure. Jenny Tesar's Scientific Crime Investigation (Watts, 1991; o.p.) covers much of the same material (though examples are not as current) in slightly less effective language but has illustrations and a glossary. Donna Jackson's The Bone Detectives (Little, Brown, 1996) treats one aspect of forensic science with full-color photographs and has an even more appealing writing style. Silverstein discusses the wealth of new technology that criminologists have at their disposal, beginning with a trace of forensic history and profiles of some of the practitioners who manipulate the clues. The bulk of the book examines how the evidence--whether blood spatters, shell casings, carpet fibers, or DNA--is recovered and analyzed. Case studies, some quite gruesome, are a large part of the text, but Silverstein has taken care not to sensationalize. She gets a little off track in her chapter on bombs, spending less time on the way technology was used to unravel the cases of the Unabomber and the Oklahoma City tragedy than on the circumstances surrounding the crimes (at one point she states the Unabomber "was" Theodore Kaczynski, only later noting he has yet to go to trial), but that's more than balanced by the wealth of intriguing information, straightforwardly delivered. I am not rating this because of the book it self but because of the seller. It took forever to receive it and I couldn't track it. Also the seller said the book was just like new. When we received it, it was stained on almost every page, the pages were torn and dirty and so was the cover. It was disgusting! My daughter needed this book for school and she was embarrassed to even carry it to school! It was awful!
