For beginners, I think this can be a very helpful book. However, in the Kindle version and especially the hard copy versions I purchased, I found multiple errors that could confuse a beginner. I was surprised, considering this is the 4th edition of the book. I looked for an errata sheet on the publishers web site and couldn't find one, so I sent a message using the web site's "contact us" capability. I'm pleased to say that the author responded quickly, both in correcting the errors in the Kindle version and in adding an errata sheet to the web site. The corrections will also propagate to new printer runs of the book, but there will be no way to tell if what you buy has the corrections unless you compare the book to the errata sheet, so I recommend that all current owners and buyers of any new hard copy version check the errata sheet.
Music theory can be a very dry subject. I had music back in high school and starting to play again, but my memory is a bit rusty. I didn't want a book that would bore me to death or take too long to find what I'm looking for.This book does the trick. It is very approachable, it has a discussion with you. It offers tricks to help you remember which is which (example such as the whole or half rests (hole or hat....how it looks on a line). I wanted to have a book where I could find the answers quickly so I could get back to playing. Although I do have some music experinece, I think this would be great for the beginner. I think, for this case, this book would be better choice than the idiot and dummies books and I am a big fan of those books.
This is the best book that I have found on basic music theory. The first edition was focused more on children, but now the author has earned his PhD in music education, it is a little more adult oriented. It has useful exercises to review each chapter, along with a good website with materials for download.One omission from the first edition was a very funny page on the blues. Perhaps it was not politically correct enough for the new publisher ( self published). Interestingly, this book is custom printed on demand by Amazon, so it takes a few extra days. Excellent binding, but some captions have strange formatting.
Great review of music theory for me as I have a band and orchestra back ground of long ago. Having a lot of oh yeah's. The author in my opinion does it in a humorous way in places so it doesn't feel like you're studying music theory and is one of the few books on the subject a person can actually enjoy the subject while learning. I'm using this book in conjunction with two other practical practice style books to learn bass guitar. My hat's off to the author because if he set out to write the first book on music theory a person could actually read he succeeded. I guess that's why he has a doctorate and I do not. Highly recommended to learn theory or as in my case needed refresher.
I have decided to learn how to play the clarinet. I am 54 and have no musical background, so I was looking for a place to start. This book is so reader friendly that I am very confident I will learn music. It is written in a clear format, one thing at a time. As far as books to help a person learn how to do something, this is the best one I have ever read. I learn new things often, so I have a lot of experience with these types of books. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone, any age that is interested in learning music.
Really enjoyed this book. I purchased the book on tape from Audacity first and liked it so much, I ordered the book as well. I also purchased the audio book and actual book of The Practice of Practice by the same author, which inspired me to buy this book. Both are great additions to any musicians library. If only I would have had these 2 books many years ago when I was just starting out in music.
Best theory book going. Taking points off for no CD and not enough built in ages for pencil and paper exercises. I listened to this first as an Audible book. I rarely purchase a book after listening, but this guy so good.
Clear explanations, but would be much more effective hearing examples- this is an AUDIO book!!
