The Biology of Desire: Why Addiction Is Not a Disease, by Marc Lewis

Review

Dr. Lewis... a former addict who recovered to become a distinguished neuroscientist and author ... writes engagingly about the addictive experience, the recovery experience and the science behind them. Whether you are looking for a foundation in the neuroscience of addiction, guidelines for recovery or just hope that recovery is possible, it's all here. The scientific information is presented in the context of day-to-day behavior and the lives of individuals you will come to care about. You'll learn more about neuroscience (and human development and psychology) than you may have thought possible. Informed by this book, you'll see how neuroscience explains addiction as a part of life, rather than a mysterious entity only experts can understand.Tom Horvath, Ph.D., President of ABPP, Practical Recover, and SMART Recovery and author of Sex, Drugs, Gambling & Chocolate: A Workbook for Overcoming AddictionsMarc Lewis's new book neatly links current thinking about addiction with neuroscience theory and artfully selected biographies. Ex-addicts, we learn, are not 'cured'; rather they have become more connected to others, wiser, and more in touch with their own humanity. This is a hopeful message that has, as Lewis demonstrates, the advantage of also being true.Gene Heyman, author of Addiction: Disorder of ChoiceThe Biology of Desire says a lot about the brain mechanisms underpinning addiction but, to its credit, does not stop there. With minor exceptions, we do not help addicts (and they do not help themselves) by ministering directly to their brains. As Mr. Lewis stresses throughout this unorthodox but enlightening book, people learn to be addicts, and, with effort, they can learn not to be addicts, too.Wall Street JournalInformed by unparalleled neuroscientific insight and written with his usual flare, Marc Lewis's The Biology of Desire effectively refutes the medical view of addiction as a primary brain disease. A bracing and informative corrective to the muddle that now characterizes public and professional discourse on this topic.Gabor Mat, M.D., author of In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With AddictionNeuroscientist Lewis delves into the functioning of the addicted brain. He intends to demonstrate that addiction (substance abuse but also behavioral addictions such as eating disorders, gambling, etc.) is not a disease....This objective is met by the detailed life stories of five recovering addicts the author has interviewed. Their descent into the grips of addiction reads like passages of a junkie's memoir: terrifying and page-turning.... [T]his work helps make sense of how addiction operates and is recommended for readers wanting to learn more on the topic.Library Journal

I have read Lewis' other book and follow his blog, and find his arguments among the most clear and comprehensive out there. He is not to be dismissed based on the title alone, which other reviewers seem wont to do. I'm giving this book 5 stars because it taught me things I did not know, despite having read hundreds if not thousands of peer-reviewed articles on drug use and addiction. Anything that makes me think differently about my own field of research deserves 5 stars.Lewis manages to synthesize a large body of literature that a layperson (which I am when it comes to the neurobiology of addiction) cannot do on one's own. I've always wished I could have a conversation with an addiction neuroscientist who had not blindly accepted the disease model, and that is essentially what this book is. However, his disagreements with others such as Nora Volkow are actually quite subtle and sophisticated, and I wonder if readers will miss the subtlety, chalking it up to mere semantics. For instance, “hijacking” of the brain’s natural reward system is the metaphor often used in the brain disease model, which some might argue is not that different from Lewis’ notion that addiction is an “accelerated” or “deep” form of the developmental learning our brains are meant to do. However, I think one crucial difference is he’s challenging the notion that the DRUG is the key point on which to intervene. The disease model needs a vector or pathogen, which the drug becomes, and this turns our attention away from what the person is experiencing and the meaning attached to that experience. Rather, Lewis argues, we have a natural motivation toward powerful emotional experiences, and drugs can provide a particularly powerful experience that we more quickly learn to seek out than other, less powerfully motivating experiences (nonlinear dynamics here being critical). Over time, people who are addicted (and not just to drugs) become trapped in the moment-to-moment experiences and disconnected from their past and future. The question becomes, how does the perspective change such that the meaning attached to the experience drugs provide is less powerful? (Understanding this also can help us to understand why most people who try drugs, even heroin, do NOT become addicted...for whatever reason the experience was not as powerful or as meaningful for them.)When we turn our attention away from the big, bad drug, it really does change how we intervene. In particular, we have a lot more to learn in exploring Lewis’ theories around ego fatigue, the addict’s perspective on time (linear v circular), and "social scaffolding." What might drain some people’s willpower more than other people’s? What are the effects of stress, inequality, oppression, and poverty on one’s ability to avoid ego fatigue, or on one’s ability to envision a better future? More importantly, what causes one to shift perspective, and can social scaffolding precipitate and not just take advantage of these shifts in perspective?

Near the end of Lewis’ valuable book on addiction and the misguided addiction treatment industry, the following quote appears:"Addicts experience something breathtaking when they can stretch their vision of themselves from the immediate present back to the past that shaped them and forward to a future that’s attainable and satisfying."He’s making a good point about how self-awareness, identity, and belonging to a caring community contribute to recovery (a word, by the way, he doesn’t like).Problem is, this point comes too late in the book to do much good. I imagine thousands of readers having given up way beforehand. Lewis himself has stated in an ill-advised diatribe against at an Amazon reviewer, the book is meant for the layperson, but that statement is hard to square with his chronic and often confusing references to brain parts that govern craving, “now thinking,” and all the other emotional and physiological factors that make addiction so baffling. He does include a little brain map near the beginning, but that didn’t help me much—and I read this book carefully. Not that his brain mapping, and frequent references to the Ventral striatum, the Amygdala, et al isn’t valuable—it is just presented in too disorganized a manner to be easily understood.Worse, I kept waiting for him to explain how this information could help an addict grow beyond his addiction. He sort of gets to this point at the very end—and his advise comes off as a bit suspect, even if it is well-intentioned. He mentions Peter Sheath’s Reach Out Recovery in the city of Birmingham, England, which is designed to enlist the community in a campaign to help addicts when they decide they want help. Great idea, but it’s unproven (and sounds Utopian). In any case, the final chapter, “Developing Beyond Addiction,” which should be the meat of the book, comes off more as an after-thought.On the plus side, he makes a strong argument—both biological and philosophical—against the disease model, arguing that addiction carves out the same neural canals as growth and learning.Memo to Marc Lewis (from a reader who’s no stranger to this problem): rewrite your book, or write another one, this time with a talented editor who can organize your strong material into something stronger.

As a UCONN grad (class of 88) this book was a wonderful retrospective of Jim Calhoun's work ethic, love, tragedies, perseverence and humor that led to a storybook finish at the NCAA Final Four. I couldn't put this book down as it took me down memory lane. I really enjoyed Jim's wit and honesty and understand why he has built such a great program. It shows how success is created; with a lttle luck but alot of hard work, perseverence, discipline and making the best of what you have. I think this is a great read for any sports fan but is a must read if you have been caught up in the magic of Connecticut basketball.

A great book, an incredible team with a legendary hall of fame coach in Jim Calhoun.A must have for any true Huskie Fan.

Calhoun and Montville have crafted a masterpiece!Calhoun writes like he talks, quick and witty (yes, it's funny!). It is an effective, fast-break style that has readers feeling like they are participating in one of Calhoun's practices. It is never boring, always moving. If you love UConn hoops, you will love this book -- guaranteed.Calhoun is never chest-thumping. His tone is honest, warm, and humble. He is even a little self-effacing (hey, not even The Coach is above reproach).Calhoun takes us from his days at Northeastern and prior, through the Dream Season, and into the X's and O's of the Championship Season. You will want read this slowly because you won't want it to end! There are a plethora of tid-bits and stories about the Calhoun era that even the most avid fans will respond with frequent shouts of "Wow!" and pumps of the fist. Thanks Coach, and thanks, Leigh -- two guys who bleed Husky blue just like the rest of us in Husky Nation!

I'm not prone to hyperbole, but after reading Dare to Dream, I can honestly say it's the single best sports book authored by a sports figure that I have had the pleasure to read since "I am Third" by Gale Sayers. When I was a kid, I used to read the Superstar series -- Mean Joe Green; Joe Namath; Wilt Chamberlain; etc... I loved those books because the author didn't get in the way of the subject matter. Just great profiles and legends. Then, as I grew older, most of the sports books became self-indulgent "here's why I'm the greatest" memoirs, totally lacking in humanity. Perhaps the worst was Rick Pitino's book on his personal philosophy -- so didactic and uninspirational -- I felt like it was written by Tony Robbins or Don Lapre. Calhoun's book is like the man himself: unassuming, grateful, honest, and sarcastic. I really loved this book, and read it in about 5 hours. I can't wait to read it again. Seriously.

I got so excited when I saw this book was out. Finally, the conclusion to the trilogy! We'll find out how every one comes together, and how Kael comes back to life, and see how they save the world. Wrong! This series is definitely not a trilogy, unless the author is leaving us with a very cruel cliffhanger.First of all, whoever edited this really needs to look at it again... a bit closer this time, no, a lot closer. There are unnecessary commas, missing words, extra words, and words with the wrong tense (past tense when it should be present or vice versa). Nobody's perfect, but this one was far from it. I don't remember the other books being this badly edited. It took me quite a while to get into this book. Probably because of the time between the second and third books. Maybe because of the jumping around in the first quarter or so of the book. It seemed like every time I finally started to get a grasp on who was who and what was happening, it switched to someone else. I can see that the jumping around was necessary to establish who's doing what within the story, but it was hard to follow for a while.Honestly, the first two books were so, so much better than this one. I don't think I could give anyone a straight, simple answer of what was really happening in this book. All I can really say is that the Ancients were trying to break the seals. That's it. That's all I've got. Other than that, I don't know why they wanted to do it, or what they will do (spoiler alert!) now that they are broken.Obviously there has to be more to this series. And when it comes, I really, really hope the writing and story are back to the level of the first two books. If not, I honestly don't know if I'll be able to follow along with the story, or if I'll want to.

This book was way too rushed. The story was disjointed and really hard to follow, especially when Kael comes back because after that, we only get brief snapshots of events going on and then the story jumps weeks or months ahead. With it being a lot shorter than the first two books, so much detail was missing that would've helped the coherency of the book, especially the development of Kael now that he is back rather than random stories placing in him some new location we have no idea how he got to. Add in another 200+ pages and this book would make a lot more sense. Definitely was disappointed with this book compared to how much I loved the first two.

The pace of the story was fast in the previous books as well. However, this time felt out of control. Character development was minimal at best. The flow and sequence of events were all over the place. Another issue is Kael's magical progression. SpoilerHe supposedly develops amazing power and magic but seems to regress and be even weaker. He had centuries to practice and fight but apparently forgets how to do anything once he returns.Still a good story overall but it would have been better off as two books as at slower pace.

4 stars because it was very entertaining. Not a five star rating because of all the spelling errors. It was still worth my time and I recomend it to anyone that loves a story about love and revenge.

The first 2 books had a good and consistent trajectory, this one felt like the story line was created by a 'lesser being'. The biggest issue is Kael comes back a possible god, kicks butt in Paradise and Perdition then barely holds his own with limited magical powers on Talhona...what??oh ya...NEVER advertise a 3 book trilogy unless its a 3 book trilogy. The world of fantasy novels is full of waaay too long stories with tangential plot lines just to make more books and more money for authors. I select series to read based on the number of books in the series. I don't appreciate the deception. Finally - did the editor quit? I've rarely read a more poorly edited book. Words missing, male/female pronouns backwards, tenses wrong. Really??A shame, the first 2 books were good. When the 4th books comes out I think I'll pass.

I would honestly put this in up my Top 3 favorite book series, next to Song of Ice and Fire and the Mazalan Book of the Fallen series. It is incredibly well written and has you constantly dying to know what happens next. That and you end up very, very attached to these characters. I can't wait for the next book. Truly a masterpiece in my opinion.

The darkness within series is fantastic. I am a massive fan of the fantasy genre and this series is one that has has had me hooked right from the first book. Each book is exciting from start to finish. I have read alot of books and after the third book in the series they often start to get a bit dull the Darkness within series does not and is deffinatly a must read.

Awesome build to a fantastic opening. Impressed not only with this whole series, but with the author as well. Asked him a simple question and had a response in less than 2 hours. Very satisfied with the dedication to not only his story and character development, but to his fan-base as well. I look forward to reading more.

I have been buying these for years to support my "family and friends" tax return practice. You can usually find very concise answers to most questions that are likely to come up on 90% of the returns that I do. Anything real complex will require more study elsewhere, and a lot of it can be found on the internet. But this book is indexed and more properly addresses most of the issues a tax preparer will need.I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because first, it is pricey and keeps getting pricier each year, and second, why don't they make an e-book version? It would save having to ship a brick heavy book every year to you.

This item is a MUST in the tax and accounting fields if you want to stay abreast the current tax laws. The authors even invite the reader to use their online website periodically to keep an eye on current tax laws which might be changing after the book is published which is especially helpful. The only downside to this book is when I researched one topic in particular, the 8862 or claiming the earned income credit after disallowance, it was silent on the matter and didn't acknowledge it at all. But for the money I spent on a used version of this book, I am not complaining one bit. If you think that the book omitting this particular topic is a sure sign of other basic tax laws also not included, you would be wrong. It is surprising but again, there is so much tax information jammed packed into this book, I'm actually surprised that more hasn't been left out. It has answered years worth of questions and even helped me win several audits for my clients because of unknown or not widely known tax rules and regulations that benefit taxpayers.

As a tax guide, I find it quite comprehensive and accurate. It is a great definitive reference source. The package that I received did not include the "special bonus CPE course supplement entitled "Top Federal Tax Issues for 2018," which focuses in on the most significant and thorniest new tax developments affecting practitioners for the year. The Top Federal Tax Issues Course allows professionals to earn CPE credit." which I have always received in the past when ordered directly from CCH. It is described in the later part of the product description (where you click "more"). So I sent it back, disappointed that the described CPE Course was not included. But the MTG itself is very good.and useful.

I work in corporate taxes full time and have access to a complete library of tax materials at work. I use this guide at home for my personal tax return and those of family and friends that I am requested to do. This answers almost 100% of the questions that come up.I do not find the text too small as one reviewer has suggested and it has been the same size since 1987. This is the best and most comprehensive small book on taxes on the market. It covers personal taxes very well, and does have a surprisingly good coverage of general corporate, partnership and not for profit corporate coverage.

The standard reference that I have used for over 50 years. A lot of stuff is available on the internet but to me this is faster and more explanatory. In addition references to the full CCH tax research service paragraphs so can be used as a super index. I wouldn't so returns without on nearby.

Tax guides are very expensive and this book was in great shape and just what I needed.

Yep, it's a Master Tax Guide... nothing sexy about that but as far as Master Tax Guides go this one is pretty dang good.

Did not address the new tax bill and its provisions in a clear manner

This book lays the groundwork of systems thinking upon which many modern management and leadership books have been written. While the book has a well-aged feel, the examples are timeless and the content universal. It stands out in the genre of systems thinking literature by addressing the point that’s been bothering many of us: If everyone wants people-centered learning organizations; why don’t they exist? Senge claims it’s because we have no idea the kind of commitment to change that is necessary. That really engaged my attention; I wondered “what exactly does it take to break the vicious cycles?” I don’t want to spoil the experience for you, because the book is certainly worth the short time it takes to read, but here are two ideas that really stood out and may motivate you to find the many others. On the discipline of building shared vision: “It's not what the vision is – it’s what the vision does.”And, surprisingly drawing on the work of theoretical physicist David Bohm during the discussion of Team Learning: ‘Dialogue and discussion are the mechanisms of team learning. Dialogue allows us to expose our thoughts to ourselves; discussion lets us defend them.’

Although it is somewhat evident that this book is a bit older and lacking some modern day examples, “The Fifth Disciple” by Peter Senge captures concepts of how to create a learning organization. Senge masterfully explains how people are stuck in a traditional way of thought and how it affects our decision making in business practices. The book also features a simulation experiment done with MIT students called, “The Beer Game.” The game results from show a repeated pattern of the points Senge is making about how we think similarly in terms of individuality and how it creates cycles in which we fail. From there, he explains his insights on how we can break these cycles from a traditional linear way of thinking to systems thinking which eventually ties in to create a better learning organization. As an engineering major, I felt this book did a very good job in tying a lot of concepts together that is practical in the major. The book also does a good job of highlighting where systems thinking is also practical in improving broader things like family, teams and organizations along with businesses. This book is definitely worth the read for anybody as it applies to everyday interactions. For anybody with management and business control positions, this book will definitely enlighten you on the benefits of operating under a learning organization especially if working in a supply chain industry.

The purpose of the Fifth Discipline is to turn corporations into learning organizations and to create learning environments for those that take part in these corporations. The author explains what the 5 disciplines are and describes the 7 learning disabilities that each of us will encounter and how to overcome them. The first discipline is personal mastery. By achieving this discipline we are able to see the results that matter most to us. The second discipline involves overcoming mental models. Mental models are ideas that are essentially ingrained into the way we think. The third discipline is building a shared vision. A shared vision is a common and genuine goal where people want to learn because they want to. The fourth discipline is team learning. Team learning is being able to enter a dialogue where ideas are shared openly and everyone is thinking together, not just a single person providing ideas and the rest of the group agrees as to not create conflict. The fifth discipline is systems thinking, the bonding agent meant to bring all the other disciplines together. This discipline is where people discover how they create their reality and how the can change it. We are then given an in depth description of the 5th discipline, systems thinking. Systems thinking is the idea that we are all part of a larger system, it wants us to view ourselves as part of nature and not just an observer separate from every other living thing. The author wants us to understand that our problems aren’t caused by some external source but instead caused by our own actions and our inability to find the root cause of our problems. He shows us how to identify naturally reoccurring patterns in nature, how people normally react to these patterns, and how to counteract the negative effects of these patterns by teaching us how to attain leverage on each type of pattern. Based on the lessons taught in this book I feel that these disciplines can be used in making effective changes in not only the workplace environment but in my community and in my personal life.

This book will leave a deep impact on its readers, regardless on how emotional they are. It is hardly possible not to get moved by the graphic details of this real-life narrative. I vaguely remember, as a child and/or teenager, having watched a film about the Khmer Rouge atrocities, and it turns out that its award-winning actor is the very author of this autobiographical account. There is a bit of a story within a story within a story, here. You'll first read Haing Ngor's account on his early life, moving on to adulthood and then his nightmare-on-Earth as a Cambodian living under the insane Khmer Rouge, to finish with his escape to Thailand and immigration into the US. But following it, one could say, there is a short, second part: Haing Ngor's 'second life' as a US émigré and the incredible story of how he ended up as an Oscar-winning actor, playing pretty much his same 'previous life' back home. And, finally, there is yet a 'third part', which is the epilogue written by the co-author, which furnishes an external look on Haing Ngor and his latter life after the publication of the book. I was ignorant of the ways Haing Ngor's life had followed in its last years, and consciously avoided looking for any information thereof before having finished the book, and I would advise the reader to do the same. I must warn them, however, that even though the 'first part' ends relatively well after so much dark suffering, and could have ended the story with a bright ending, the 'stories on the story', which follow up, are both brutally sad. What a life the author lived!... Cambodia is now on my travel list, thanks to this book, which has left such an indelible impression upon me.

What an amazing read. I couldn't put it down. It's horrifying, fascinating, and captivating. The ending was a shock but I won't spoil it. I read this while in Cambodia and it gave me tremendous appreciation for the place and the historical context of some of the touristy places I was going like the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng. Just a warning though, this book is upsetting. The subject matter is upsetting (genocide) and the story is non-fiction and very disturbing.

As a powerful narrative, this story is both a warning of humanity's capacity for evil and a deeply humbling account of refugee realities past & present. However, it is graphic and disturbing, but in no way did I feel it was gratuitous in descriptions. The author is honest in his self-portrayal as a flawed individual which adds to the authenticity.

Best book I've read this year. It's a description of hell on earth - where nonsense and evil reigns. For a man to survive and live a productive life after is incredible. Haing is just human, so he has his weaknesses, faults and problems after Cambodia; but I still admire him. May his soul rest in peace.

Having became engrossed in the history of "the killing fields" during a recent trip to Cambodia, I started reading books I could order online while traveling. Of the three that I read, which featured comparably grim survival stories, this was the most vivid, compounded by the incredible irony that this author -- a medical doctor -- went on to reach Los Angeles and win an Academy Award for portraying Dith Pran in THE KILLING FIELDS. It is no wonder, given personal experiences that the author vividly describes in this book, that the role of a man who also lived through and survived the horrors of the Khmer Rouge years was played so convincingly.

If you are interested in reading the memoir of someone who survived the reign of the Khmer Rouge, then I can't reccommend any other book higher. I have read two other books from survivors, but Ngor's book was by far my favourite. What sets Ngor's book apart from the others that I have read is that Ngor was an adult when the Khmer Rouge took over. His memories are very lucid, and he fully comprehends what is going on around him. He watches his young wife die in his arms, those close to him betray, and everyone around him suffer. There are no high points throughout the entire odysey. Ngor brings you to the senseless and incomprehensible suffering that pervades every aspect of life under the Khmer Rouge. One element I particularily enjoyed about Ngor's book is the extensive descriptions of Cambodian culture, attitudes and behaviour. Cambodian society (from what I can gather from what I have hitherto studied) is highly formal, with a rather complex series of formality set up for intereaction with others and a rather reserved character in regards to expression of feelings. The most important of which in this context being "kum," which is a sort of bitterness and longing for revenge, that becomes evident in a lot of what is happening. You will leave this read with a feeling of not only being inside of what is happening, but also for the actual mechanisms guiding behaviour. This is, however, not a pleasant read in the least. The descriptions of the atrocities are beyond anything that I was expecting, and for that reason, I would seriously warn others that this is not for the faint at heart. Luckily, Ngor offers notes at the beginning of graphic chapters so that one can skip over them. You will lose sleep, and I can guarantee you that it makes any of those goofy horror movies like "Hostel" and "Turistas" look like a day at Disneyland. This horror is real, and not far in the past. Being that my normal area of study is Russian history, I have read a lot about the horrors of communism and tyranny, but nothing from the basements of Lyubyanka Prison or Mao Tse Tung's Cultural Revolution comes close to the abominable atrocities of Pol Pot's Cambodia.Ngor also describes his role in the classic movie, The Killing Fields, as well as his integration of life in America. An afterword by friend Roger Warner ends the book on a particularily haunting and sad note, but rightfully so, none the less. There are a lot of truely excellent books available by survivors of the Killing Fields, and this is the quintessential starting point for those who wish to learn more.

Rating:5 of 5 stars (outstanding)Review:From humble beginnings as the son of a fisherman in Panama to becoming, according to most, the best relief pitcher in the history of baseball, Mariano Rivera tells his story in “The Closer.” This book is much like many other memoirs written by players with assistance from professional writers in that the player looks back fondly at his playing days and many of the teammates and other people who helped him become a star in his chosen sport. However, what makes this autobiography stand out is that Rivera shows that his persona as a member of the New York Yankees, humble and thankful for his talent, is who he really is as a person. This is brought out by his frequent references to two topics that are important parts of his life. They are his faith in the Lord and the devotion to his wife Clara. Rivera often refers to his faith as his means of dealing with awful occurrences (9/11 and the loss of two family members due to electrocution in a swimming pool), trying to come to grips with understanding others (use of PED’s for example) or even just how he keeps his work ethic and how he deals with low points of his career, such as the seventh game of the 2001 World Series. His devotion to Clara is also evident throughout the book as well. He does consult and pray with her for many personal issues. One touching part that struck me was when he wanted to take a leave of absence from the Yankees on a road trip to attend his son’s elementary school graduation. The manager, Joe Torre, didn’t want to approve but knew that he couldn’t stop Rivera if that is what he wanted to do. Rivera turned to Clara for assistance in making the decision and thanked her for that and everything else she did for him during their marriage. By the way – Rivera stayed with the team for the road trip.Rivera doesn’t talk a lot about controversial topics such as PED’s but when he does express an opinion in the book; he is open and honest and doesn’t care about the reaction. The best example of this is when he stated that he would like to have Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox as the second baseman on his team. This upset many Yankee fans – how dare a lifetime Yankee player say a RED SOX player is the best? But Rivera just was honest in his opinion on this topic as he was with any other one.The book follows his chronological path during his youth, his tryout with the Yankees in Panama and his storied Yankee career. He doesn’t get too detailed in recounting seasons and even skims or ignores milestones he achieved. The game in 2011 in which he became the all time saves leader is worth two paragraphs. Yet, he moves the reader in which he gracefully and humbly acknowledges all that he has done and praises teammates and foes alike. Some of these passages are heart-tugging. I admit that my eyes moistened when he recalled being removed from the game in his last Yankee Stadium appearance in 2013 by teammates Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter. He was sobbing in their arms on the mound and his recollection in the book of that moment is one that the reader will know is truly heartfelt and emotional. The entire book is a great read for baseball fans, especially Yankee fans. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to read about not only one of the greatest players to ever play the game, but also one of the best human beings to play the game as well.Did I skim?NoPace of the book:Excellent. Because Rivera doesn’t break down every detail of his childhood, his personal life or each season he pitched for the Yankees, the reader will move through the book with amazing speed.Do I recommend?Yes. Whether the reader is a baseball fan, one who likes to read biographies or memoirs or even just to read about someone who is true to his faith, this book will be a fine choice.

In a day and age when sports figures seem to be constantly in the news for one imbroglio after another. (I write this shortly after Robinson Cano was suspended for PED violations.) It is refreshing to read the memoir of a Hall of Fame player such as Mariano Rivera who conducted himself with total class on and off the field.Mariano's memoir is also a trip down memory lane as he let's us relive the golden age that was the recent Yankee dynasty. He is unique in that he is constantly pausing in his telling of events to heap praise on his fellow Yankees such as Joe Torre, Tino Martinez, Bernie Williams, Derek Jeter, Andy Pettite and Jorge Posada. Unlike a lot of other sports memoirs Mo likes to turn the spotlight on others even singling out opposing players for praise. Finally, he describes how after retiring from baseball. Mo an extremely devout Christian bought and refurbished a Church for which he invested $4 million dollars of his own money where his wife is now the head Pastor.

I had high hopes for "The Closer" being an inventive, literary baseball memoir, because Mariano Rivera hired Wayne Coffey as his ghost-writer, and because Coffey two years ago was responsible for R.A. Dickey's brilliant Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball. Rivera has had a longer and more successful (although, admittedly, a much less colorful) career than Dickey, with much higher highs, so I thought, going in, that this book could be something extra special. The first couple of chapters do deliver, similar to Dickey's autobiography. Coffey takes us back to Rivera's exceedingly modest childhood in a small fishing village off the west coast of Panama. One early chapter is full of harrowing moments of life on board Rivera's father's fishing boat, with near-death experiences, the actual death of a beloved relative, and a seemingly miraculous escape from drowning. Another chapter features several moments of horrifying abuse at the hands of Rivera's brutal tyrant of a father.Rivera's (again) miraculous escape from Panama to become a pitcher in the Yankees' minor league chain -- when Rivera hadn't really done much pitching in local ball and had already been passed over by scouts as a shortstop -- leads also to some nice moments of him getting by in the low minor leagues, speaking hardly any English and being overshadowed, early on, by higher-rated prospects such as the Yanks' ill-fated #1 draft pick Brien Taylor. After that, though, the book becomes merely standard. Coffey takes us year by year from 1995 through 2013, each of Rivera's years in the big leagues, mostly focusing on the famous post-season moments that we're all quite familiar with already from YES Network and ESPN Classic reruns. We also meet most of Rivera's famous Yankee teammates and are told nice, pleasant things about just about all of them. Only a few times do we learn things that weren't already public record (such as the abuse hurled on Rivera in the Fenway Park bullpen at a crucial moment in the 2004 American League Championship Series, or an episode of racism that affected Rivera when he first attempted to purchase a house in New York City's northern suburbs). The only teammates Rivera says anything vaguely scandalous about, are Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano. However, Mo's opinions on these two players are hardly ground-breaking; with paternalistic disappointment, Rivera chides A-Rod's endless string of PR blunders and on-field brain-freezes, and Cano's seeming lack of motivation. One final word: when thinking about Rivera, the two words that first come to mind are "clutch" and "religious". Sure enough, there is an awful lot of Christianity in this book, with Rivera chalking up every ounce of athletic triumph in his career to the Lord rather than to his own hard work and determination. There are a few Bible quotations as well, which Coffey selects from one of the more simply-worded recent New Testament adaptations; these quotes probably sound different from the ones you may have heard growing up. If you share Rivera's deep faith, then this is another important reason to read the book.In the end, I was happy to read this book to support Rivera, and to revisit some great baseball moments. There are some fascinating pages sprinkled throughout, but in the end, "The Closer" is not really the literary equivalent of the 1998 Yankees.
