This book is greatly focused on how to improve the quality of the business process. This book has explained the foundations of Lean Six Sigma in a manner that is easy to understand for beginners. With the help of this book, even people without the knowledge of Lean Six Sigma could easily understand and catch up with this great topic. I find this book very helpful and has adequate information for this topic.

I was hoping to gain the knowledge to actually begin my Six Sigma journey. Instead, I found this book to be more of a dictionary of acronyms combined with an executive-level argument toward implementing it within an organization.

I must commend the efforts of the writer to create something this good. I knew only a little about the Lean Six Sigma, but not so much of the benefits. I never even knew that the Lean Six Sigma was a combination of two different terms (Lean and Six Sigma).I enjoyed every bit of time spent reading the book.

Although this is the very first book I have read about the lean six sigma, I am really glad it was this book I chose. For some reason, I feel like it contains all the necessary information I need because it feels complete. It was a good read.

If there were more than 5 stars, I would have rated this book with it. Even those who are familiar with the Lean Six Sigma method can learn a couple of thing from this book. It was so easy to read and I felt very comfortable reading it. It was also easy to assimilate and the author made sure to define most of the terms used before using them.

I read this book twice. I used this book to get my Lean Six Sigma Sensei Certification. I recommend this book to anyone looking to use Lean Six Sigma methodologies in their company. I plan on using this to help my current team at work. It was easy to understand. I loved reading and listening at the same time.

I bought it first in audible version, and what I learned abou Lean Six Sigma was so good (I was from commom basic knowledge) that I bought the paperback to re read and have it for quick references.

The Lean Six Sigma is a very interesting principle. As I read through it I began to see how unique it is and how well it can make an organization become better. This book has good information about it and helps the reader understand how to properly apply it as a working principle.

Review

"For every hiker, climber or canoeist who gets into trouble, there are thousands more who don't. Peter Bronski's compelling account of misadventures in the Adirondacks is a necessary corrective for those who go into the mountains unwary of the dangers." --Jim Wickwire, author of Addicted to Danger: A Memoir About Affirming Life in the Face of Death and the first American to summit K2 "In this compelling book, award-winning adventure writer and former Lower Adirondack Search and Rescue team member Peter Bronski chronicles true stories of survival and tragedy, from famous historical cases during the early twentieth century to modern tales of harrowing struggle in the mountains and wilderness. Extensively researched, these gripping tales pull together historical accounts, firsthand interviews, previously untold stories, and expert analysis to retrace each misadventure. More than just a recounting of tragedy in the wilderness, At the Mercy of the Mountains is an affirmation of the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity and an insight into why misadventure happens in the first place―and how to avoid it. It is a must-read for hikers, climbers, paddlers, armchair travelers―anyone who loves great tales of adventure." --Associated Press

Peter Bronski's collection of survival stories is riveting. Beginning with an introduction discussing the unique history and characteristics that are the Adirondacks, Bronski sets the tone for some amazing and harrowing true stories. The infamous 1995 `blowdown' (derecho) is witnessed by several campers, where tornado-like microburst combined with thousands of lightning strikes terrifies the region. The storm leaves campers stranded in a mix of tangled trees piled like matchsticks. Four young men on a winter hiking trip suddenly experience a fast regional thaw and watch as several feet of snow turn to slush, suddenly flooding their lean-to and leaving them to hike over treacherous lakes and rivers that can't hold their weight. An experienced pilot and his wife crash their small plane into a mountainside, barely surviving, only to find themselves miles from nowhere. These are just some of the stories that the author brings to life, some old and some recent. The most striking aspect this collection is the emphasis on search and rescue (SAR) in conjunction with the survivors ordeals. There are numerous missing persons mentioned over the years, some found and some lost forever. Instead of dwelling on morbid or gory descriptions, Bronksi focuses on the survivors and those that risk their lives to save others. Sometimes remnants of a lost hiker are found years later. Sometimes the family never gives up the search. This book is an instant classic and a must read for any outdoor enthusiast, especially if they travel in the Adirondacks.

To those of us who have come to appreciate the God-created majesty and beauty of the Adirondak Mountains, Peter Bronski's book reminds us that "the wildness" of weather and terrain can quickly become desperate enemies to the overly adventurous among us. Amazing stories that give us a deep appreciation for those mountain natives that are able to mount death defying rescues quickly.

What a wonderful read. I just recently discovered hiking/camping in the Adirondacks and its become my new love.... So during the week when I'm in the city working and there is no chance of being in the wilderness (And I'm itching for the weekends)... This book helps to quell that itch and gives me something to read so I feel like I'm there. This book brings it all to life, the perfect mix of storytelling, facts/information (perfect for understanding where everything is taking place) and suspense. It also makes one respect the power of nature and the Adirondacks, and if you're a hiker, definitely helps you get an understanding of what can do wrong. The stories are numerous and just the right length. Just when you have reached the end of one, the next is beginning. Lastly the author does an excellent job of combining quotes in the beginning of each chapter from sources that I'm sure to follow up on and will make my reading list in the future. Good job and thanks for the awesome read!!!

I just read the Preface and I am hooked. Peter Bronski's writing style is both passionate and eloquent. The pages come alive with his love and respect for the outdoors and especially the Adirondacks. I am very happy and jumping back in right now :)

Having lived near the Adirondacks and having ridden motorcycles all over them, I was familiar with many of the mountains and places. I lived through the micro burst and the ice storm of 98. All the stories were excellent and in some cases very intriguing. Highly recommend if you are interested in survival situations.

I cut my outdoor teeth in the high peaks region back in the late 70s & early 80s. The beauty and unpredictability of the weather in this region are unmatched. My spine tingled as I read the harrowing stories of people caught in the clutches of bad situations, and fighting to make the best of it. I've been a Search & Rescue team member in Kern County Ca and Monterey county Ca, and been in some truely frightening situations, but none as scary as a severe thunder & lightning storm on the top of Giant Mountain. This book brought back the rememberance of my primal fear...feeling my hair stand up from the static building before the lightning strikes, the screaming of both me and my trailmates, as the thunder boomed, reminding us of how frail life really is. What a great book!

This book is useful in case study about hiking / backpacking deaths and dangers. Recommended. These are REAL dangers... not the make-believe "paranormal" fantasies pushed by paranoid types.

Tragedies and near tragedies told in a very conversational style. You felt like you knew the people that work the rescue teams in the White Mountains after reading this book.

If you follow ultrarunning at all, you're familiar with Kilian Jornet. He's only 25, but he has already won the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc 3 times, won Western States, and set the record for the ascent/descent of Mt. Kilimanjaro. He's a phenomenal runner and an inspiration to those who see him run.Unfortunately, the inspiration has a hard time coming through in his new book, Run or Die. Reading Run or Die is certainly an interesting experience, essentially a stream-of-consciousness race report on some of Kilian's big runs: his trans-Pyrennes run, UTMB, WS (his first race there, when he came in third), and his Mt. Kilimanjaro run. We read the blow-by-blow of the runs, as well as his reflections on life and running. For me, Run or Die misses the most important element of a running book: inspiring me to get up and run. Rather than feeling like, "Wow! That's a lot of running! I want to go run now!" I felt like "Hmm. That guy runs a lot. I don't think I can run like that. What's for dinner?" I realize this is more a reflection on me than on Kilian, but I have read plenty of running memoirs that inspire me to lace them up and head out the door.Kilian will be fun to watch as his career continues. It seems like he has what it takes to dominate the sport of trail running for many years to come. I will be interested to read his next book, maybe 5-10 years down the road, when, I think, he'll have more to share. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the electronic review copy!

This book is memoir by arguably the top ultra-runner of his generation. If your looking for time splits, tips on interval training, how to run hills then keep looking, this ain't that book. This is about a person who approaches races as " journeys" and who basically is so talented he invents challenges for himself...like running around the rim of Lake Tahoe in one shot or if he can across a pryennes mountain range in 7 days.I think the big take away is that it's not what place you come in but the journey. For example, There is an entire chapter devoted him breaking the fastest accent and decent of mt. Kilimanjaro and the reader never finds what the old record was and by how much did he beat it by.The one thing the book does is give the reader an idea of the amount of suffering takes place as he is accomplishing these feats. one assumes that people with genetic disposition to run don't suffer during a race or " journey" but you would wrong. My opinion the best chapter is about how he overcome all his misery to win the 2012 western states in a sprint.the guy is about 24 or 25 and it kind of shows. I admire his outlook on running...creating art through exhurition. the book is not going to be a roadmap to how you can be a better runner but it does give you insight to what true passion for running is about.

I've become deeply involved in ultra running over the past year and have read +15 books about it. Killian's Run or Die is down on the list as one of my least favorites. It's extremely artsy and wordy, describing in deep detail his experience he has while running. I was actually hoping the book would be like this, but its very sporadic and jumps around from his early childhood to his FKT attempts. He is an amazing runner and I am always impressed by his videos on YouTube, but as a writer he didn't win the race.I recommend it only to the very involved ultra runner, as it does bring in some interesting experiences and questions we ultra runners all have. If this is one of your first running books you've picked up, put it back on the shelf for a later day. Worth reading but not if you are trying to get into the sport.

Kilian Jornet is, arguably, the world's greatest ultramarathoner. But he is not, at least at this point in his life, as gifted a writer as he is a runner. In a short 180 pages, Jornet gives the reader a sense of why he runs but if you are looking for an explanation of _how_ he runs --- the nutrition, training, rest, etc. --- then you'll be disappointed. What you do learn, though, is that running, skiing, and connecting with nature are at the core of his being. In the chapter about his record-setting run of the Tahoe Rim Trail he and his pacer get lost and have to back-track but rather than lash out or sink into depression, Jornet remarks, "more miles, more smiles!" For him, it seems, it is all about the miles.

No doubt one of the most extraordinary athletes ever, but really not a great writer. As other reviews have said, this is not a ‘how I do it’ kind of book, and I found it hard to engage with his presentation of ‘why I do it’. If you’re a fan of ultra running, Born to Run and Endure are far far better. If you’re a fan of Jornet, which I am, it’s a lot more fun to just read race reports.

I am not into ultra running and had never heard about Kilian before seeing his book on the shelves, but I had expected some more depth or details/ statistics before reading the book. Although I find he attempt to dive into the concept of winning and competing, he should probably have filled it up with some few more hard facts to make it more interesting etc.

I think something must be lost in translation, it is an interesting look at Kilian's running and skiing through his eyes but the translation leaves the book wordy and over describing the environment which makes it a bit of a bore to read. I can relate to his excitement, pain, ups and downs, and grueling fatigue from long days running which is when I feel most connected but I think the native version of the book must read a lot better because the wordiness of the description of the environments left me skipping ahead a lot to get to the good stuff.

Despite the language barrier, Kilian does a great job of putting you in the driver seat for some of his toughest runs. Ultra runners will find great inspiration and value in Kilian's mental game as he pushes through the last third of his races.Recommended for - Fans of Kilian's Quest on YouTube - Ultra Runners with an "embrace the pain" mentality - Those who enjoyed the action scenes of "Born to Run", "Eat & Run"

A Year in the Life of a Shinto Shrine, by John K. Nelson

From Library Journal

Nelson (Asian studies, Univ. of Texas, Austin), who has lived and taught in Japan, shows great sensitivity to the difficulty Westerners have in approaching Shinto, sometimes called the most Japanese of religions. Following a basic introduction, he describes in fairly simple terms the details of significant rituals and festivals that take place at Suwa shrine in Nagasaki. His book goes a long way toward shedding light on the unique mythology and outlook on Shinto, at times drawing significant parallels with Native American concepts. Nelson explores the connections between Shinto and the somewhat fanatical ends to which it was put in service of the political agenda of World War II Japan; he also examines the implications of the presence of this particular shrine in the heart of one of the cities on which the bomb was dropped. In his introductory and concluding chapters, Nelson reflects on the resurgent nationalism to which Shinto might once again fall prey, and these chapters strike a different, somewhat editorializing tone. On the whole, however, the book is scholarly as well as readable. Recommended for Asian studies collections and other public and academic collections with an interest in the subject.?Mark Woodhouse, Elmira Coll. From the Back Cover

What we today call Shinto has been at the heart of Japanese culture for almost as long as there has been political entity distinguishing itself as Japan. A Year in the Life of a Shinto Shrine describes the ritual cycle at Suwa Shrine, Nagasaki's major Shinto shrine. Conversations with priests, other shrine personnel, and people attending shrine functions supplement John K. Nelson's observations of over fifty shrine rituals and festivals. He elicits their views on the meaning and personal relevance of the religious events and the place of Shinto and Suwa Shrine in Japanese society, culture, and politics. Nelson focuses on the very human side of an ancient institution and provides a detailed look at beliefs and practices that, although grounded in natural cycles, are nonetheless meaningful in late-twentieth-century Japanese society.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book but it came highly recommended in relation to questions I had been asking online about Shinto. I have enjoyed the insight it gives from its first perspective of the goings on of the shrine as well as relevant history and social influences of the shrine as well as Shinto as a whole.

The author uses a major Shinto Shrine, Nagasaki's Suwa Shrine, as the focus of the book. It starts out with chapters about Kami, the history of the shrine and a overview of rituals and ceremonies then the book is cut up into Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. It has lots of details, including, in the back, a map of the shrine, glossary of terms, list of festivals and rituals of the Suwa Shrine and works cited. The details are about this ONE Shrine, so if you wanted a book on all kami and shrines in Japan THIS is not it. Yet it does give a nice first person account of events in a Shinto Shrine, dealing with beliefs, practices and how the shrine interacts with the city's community, businesses and families. Kind of like seeing the forest by examing one of the trees.A must for people interested in Shintoism or Japan.

For someone interested in the "human" side of Shinto religion, Nelson's book is a fascinating study of a religion little understood by most westerners. Its best to skip the introductory chapters, which are a bit pedantic and dry, and start with the actual description of shrine activities. Nelson is most interesting when talking about the priests and their relationship with Shinto, their "parishioners" and each other. Ultimately, it is this sort of writing that convinces the reader that Shinto is not a bunch of exotic rituals, but has a very real meaning and value in its followers lives. Written in 1996, Nelson poses a number of questions about Shinto's future throughout the book. It would be interesting if a second edition of the book was published updating the reader on the present activities of the shrine and its priests.

As a student of comparative religions, I enjoy seeking understanding not only through academic texts, but also through "armchair anthropology" in which the author takes me to places I would never otherwise experience and shows me cultures I might otherwise not understand. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip through the seasons of worship in a Shinto shrine.

This is a great treatment of the activity of a prominent Shinto shrine.Professor Nelson covers the subject thoroughly and in a very readable style. I especially found his liberal perspective insightful and informative.

A nice look at the ancient in the midst of a very modern society. It shows well that a sense of connection to something larger helps people weather the troubling realities of life. The writing is a little dry, but it is an unusual and important piece of cultural anthropology.

Very good read if one is interested in Shintoism! Highly suggested.

This is an excellent book for understanding Shinto. Many books on religion talk about abstract philosophies or creation myths as if those were the only things that mattered in a religion. But the day-to-day religion shouldn't be ignored, the rituals shouldn't be forgotten. This book takes the approach of showing what life is like at a typical shrine, what things a priest or visitor thinks and worries about. It uses that as a framework to talk about the principals and philosophies of the religion, teaching you to understand Shinto the way a Japanese person growing up might experience it.For example, praying for blessings for a good new year is more important than the creation myths, and you will understand that.
