Those who know something about Sister Thea Bowman might recall her as an African-American nun in the mid-century U.S. who used her charismatic personality and musical talent to evangelize, uplift, and educate her people. This well documented biography details that history in depth, from her teaching days and scholarly work through the civil rights era and on to efforts to promote and organize black Catholics, encouraging them to share their particular gifts within the church. We come to know Thea as a joyous and tireless person who learned to express herself and her culture for the enrichment of all, even as cancer ravaged her body and led to her premature death. It is therefore a bit strange that she is not widely known even in Catholic circles although she preached (or perhaps, in the best sense of the word, "performed") throughout the U.S., Europe, and Africa. This book seeks to remedy that void and does so in such detail that it sometimes becomes just a listing of her many appearances, workshops, conferences. However, one cannot help but admire and be amazed by this dedicated and genuinely engaging personality who has now been proposed for canonization.

I really wanted to like this book; I have been strongly affected by Sr. Thea Bowman's charism. However, the book has too much editorializing. The author tends to inject herself in too many asides and parenthetical statements. However, the weakest point was the focus on Sr. Thea's celebrity status. Instead of focusing on who Sr. Thea was and what she did, the focus was placed on her connections with Harry Belafonte and Whoopi Goldberg. It seemed more pride was taken in these Hollywood connections than in the person of Sr. Thea. Likewise her segment on "60 Minutes" was exploited throughout the last third of the book several times.However, to be honest, as bad as the second half was, it is the best book on Sr. Thea that I have read (my third). Someday someone will tell the story right.

Sister Thea was a remarkable woman and this book makes that abundantly clear. An inspiring read!

This is the most comprehensive Larousse dictionary I have owned. After studying Spanish for 10 years, I wished I had gotten it sooner! I used this book while traveling, but mostly academically. There are many entries that give more examples of meaning that other dictionaries. This was recommended to me by a professor and I would recommend it to another student.

I love the content but the print is way too small. What is the point of having a great dictionary if it is so hard to read. Very dissapointed.

Absolutely Excellent Spanish Dictionary. TINY print! You may need bright light and/or reading glasses! (I'd read that in reviews before purchasing, and they were correct!)

It should be also mentioned that this second edition covers new technologies such as wavelet-based compression. This is one of the best textbook to study still-image compression, while may be somewhat insufficient to study video compression.

Very nice introductory book

This book has all the ingredients for a great textbook. It provides good theoratical background without going into unnecessary details, gives lot of discussion about applications, provides great exercise problems, and above all it has outstanding examples that makes some of the difficult concepts easy to understand.Data compression needs a lot of background in information theory and other areas specific to speech, image processing etc. It is impossible to give a rigourous theoratical treatment of all of those in one volume. A strong point of this book is that it gives you just enough background on a variety of topics - without making the whole book obscure. In that respect, it is very application and implementation oriented. It is in fact what it says it is: A very good "INTRODUCTION to Data Compression"

Amazon claims that this is "the definitive guide". I have to agree with them because this book is the only broad grey pages introduction to data compression that I have been able to find, and it is very well written.If you are only casually interested in data compression this book is not for you.If you are interested in adding compression to your application and your data falls into a common category, sound, video, text ect this book is probably not for you. You should look to the open source community or buy an off the shelf product.But if your data is odd or unique like say telemtry data (I'm sure there are other examples I just can't think of any) and you need to design a compression scheme for your data this book is "the only" book for you.If you want to begin research into data compression and you are a newbie this book is a must have.

This textbook is fairly comprehensive on the various compression algorithms, and the theory behind them. However, a CD with included sample code and the "example" pictures mentioned in the text would have helped tremendously in conveying the material. As it is, the text tries to explain the algorithms using math with no sample code whatsoever.

The best thing about this book is the coverage and organization of the material. Sayood covers a wide variety of compression topics without getting into the nitty gritty details of them all. Thats why its an "Introductory" book. This book is a valuable resource for those who want to know the basics of various compression techniques and can be used as a starting point for further details. Some topics like arithmetic coding are covered in more detail than others. The book is also organized nicely with mathematical foundations provided as and when necessary.

Many reviewers tried to say that this book should avoid the word "introduction" in it's name because of it's intensive mathematics. But I'm totally disagree. Mathematics and all theoretical aspects explained in this book is just a preliminary review compare to what the researchers all around the world are doing in the data compression area. This book is really an "introduction" book.This book is very comprehensive. You'd absolutely need it if you are going to start a research in this area. If you're just wonder how data can be compressed, you can try other easy books like Peter Wayner's :"Compression Algorithms for Real Programmers". Or if you need compression as a feature in your software product, I'd suggest you not to implement it yourself. Try 3rd party library. Data Compression is the job for specialists.

The book is one of the clearest I have read as a text book. Why cant everybody write like this?? There is very good flow throughout the text.Only complaint is the software. It looks the software has not kept pace with the book itself. Some additional software has to be added (for Transform coding, for instance), and some references in the text book to the software are incorrect. If the accompanying software is upgraded, as it should be, I will rate this book a clear 5-star.

I did not back-tested or applied the strategy.The described strategy is... SIMPLE as title says.And, it shows some example using two or more technical index for winning rate and sticking to pre-planned strategy, condensly in a very easy words with clear presentation.Not bad for $3, if you have no experience in algorithm trading and no clue about how to mix multiple technical index.

I loved this book! I began trading 12 years ago but really began to educate myself on trading 7 years ago. I have read everything from Bogle, Livermore, Swedroe, Solin, Gaffen to Elder, Schiff, Maloney, Covel, Murphy, Swanson, Swager, Little, Kirkpatrick, Couling, Parness, Young, Oneill. The problem with majority of the right hand side authors you have to find certain brokerage services or buy their packages/programs to learn more. Now Heitkoetter does want you to use his volatility based charting system that some brokerage services do not offer. If you are day trading I do recommend finding a brokerage firm that offers this service as using time charts is better for the swing trader. The brokerage houses that I found that have the volatility charting are TD Ameritrade (since the bought Think or Swim) and Interactive Brokers (IB) but could not get it for Fidelity.His strategies are great in here but I want you to understand that a great trader becomes great when he finds his own techniques. It could be to use Keitkoetter's system but maybe change up the Bollinger Bands/MACD/RSI time frames.

I found this book to be very good, straight to the point, and exciting in the way of making you feel that this is accomplishable. I have read this and Mark's free download book, and I am pleased with the simplicity of detail. Whether you are a beginner day trader as I am or been doing this for some time I think you can benefit from this.The most important thing is that it helped me understand just how how to even create a day trading strategy. This book is all that he says it is.

As someone who just started learning Options trading as of last summer and trading stocks for over 4 years, I have been buying books and scouring the internet to gain better knowledge on Technical Analysis, Options Mechanics and just sharpening my trading, this has got to be the best and most simplest book i have ever bought. Now I graduated undergrad as a Business Admin-MIS major, some emphasis in Computer Science and now studying my MBA in IS and Computer Science, i'm pretty sharp in the mind. So when I decided to start learning investing I bought a few books, which I thought were pretty good but I started to search more and more and really needed something along the lines of learning specific strategies for Intraday/Swing/Momentum trading. This book did it. Like i said I am now a more focused options trader and just bought this book two days ago, back tested the strategy and its clear, cut and straight to the point...just how I like it. I studied the strategies in this book separately and have done moderately well in Options trading but as I am writing this and testing the strategy in the market as we speak, the strategy works. I wish I would have bought this book a few years ago. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a simply strategy as the book is titled, so you can actually help consistently increase your portfolio. I am about to update my trading plan today!!Update: So I decided to come back and write an update review on this book. This book has done wonders for me. I updated my trading plan to incorporate this strategy in my trading and I've consistently had winning trades. The market, of course, will have its own direction but using this strategy will help follow that direction and snag some profits. For example, since I day trade options I make sure all my positions are flat by EOB and usually only trade securities that have a large daily swings, I tested this strategy with JC Penny which usually swings between a 10 - 30 cent change daily on the stock, I was able to get a 100% return on an Options trade because of this strategy. Now I maintain a set watchlist (about 10) of companies I trade using just this strategy. It works people. It's very simple, takes a lot of the confusion and noise out of the trading and the strategy makes sense because of the type of investment you are working with (read the book to find out what I mean by that). I am always looking to sharpen my trading strategy and this book did the trick. I actually started to learn other indicators and pair with this strategy and it's paying off. Get this book!!

This is an excellent read, and I knew so when he said he preferred tick to time charts and range was even better than tick. That screams professional. This simple strategy will allow you to "eat" while you get better at trading. I have 13 years experience as a trader, oh wait, 14 now. I believe in continuing education. This little book will help the novice as well as remind the seasoned professional looking to add yet another tool to their box. Without finishing the book I threw up a chart and rocked 37 cent a contract, while I finished reading. Yeah, and my risk was all of a nickel. I also knew he was spot on when he pegged his euro setting at 12 cent. If that 12 cent figure didn't resonate with you, buy the book. If the 12 cent figure did resonate with you, then buy the book. I will leave you with this. 17 cent on the pound.

I suffer from "analysis paralysis" and get so overwhelmed with all the information about trading available on the net, books, seminars, etc. That's why I am extremely happy that I stumbled upon the Rockwell website with its free E-Book titled "The Complete Guide to Day Trading." The author simplifies a very complex subject- day trading- using very few pages. In this book, "The Simple Strategy," the author clarifies exactly how to use a few powerful indicators and how to apply them to the different markets. He also provides links for a free paper trading account, charting software, etc. I'm not sure why he does it, but I for one am grateful. Thanks Markus!
