A waste of time and money. Narrow listings with stupid questions of agents. I replaced it with the excellent reference: Writer's Digest Guide to Literary Agents 2019.
I really enjoyed this guide. It was informative and provided a glimpse into the minds of hundreds of literary agents and editors. This book presents invaluable information for every author. I’m grateful to have access to so many tips about publishing. This guide covered topics including the initial query letter, independent presses and the top 5 Publishers, just to name a few! I highly recommend this book if you have written or are thinking of writing a book.
I totally agree with Marlo Faulkner's one-star assessment and really like the way she put it: useless blather! Literary agents were asked, for example, whether they thought the earth was created a few thousand years or several billion years ago, and that was only one of Jeff Herman's 10+ inane questions. Who cares? What a waste of space! The emphasis should have been on what the agents were looking for in a manuscript, specifically their personal likes and dislikes. Instead many of them are looking for "something that "entices me" or "makes me forget everything around me" or"makes you press the pause button on all your duties and responsibilities." This is clearly unacceptable and not helpful at all. What rubbish! Fit for the bin!
I like this book. He gives you a lot of information on the agents. What types of books they represent, who they are, and what they believe. This book will help find a good fit, which I believe is good for both parties.
I’m almost done with this book, and it has been a joy to read. I can tell the author has a soft spot in his heart for writers. That being said, he doesn’t give anyone the impression that this business is a breeze for anyone involved. Honest and informative.

I had previous versions of this book, but I noticed the new version does not have Canadian presses or university presses. I would have appreciated knowing why that was done. But it's a good resource.
