Sadly, the content promised by the title is a very small percentage of what's in this guide. If you've never traveled, and need to know how to pack a suitcase, you might like this book. For anyone else, the actual info on Italy is sparse, at best. I also found the repeated reliance on "Pros and Cons" lists overdone - what this author authoritatively considers a "pro" many others would consider a "con" and vice versa. (Not sure how many time that occurs in the book - I didn't make it very far before I was clicking to page forward on my Kindle as fast as I could, hoping to get to SOMETHING actually covering travel in Italy!)

If you're planning your first trip abroad and Italy is your destination, then this book is filled with great advice for you. But you don't have to be a first timer, or even planning a trip to Italy, to get some good information here. Many of the chapters contain ideas and tips that are useful for Europe and other destinations too. And no matter how many times you've traveled, there are always new hints that can make your trip easier and more enjoyable. The packing advice alone makes this a worthwhile resource. The information appears to be up to the minute for things like TSA issues: shoes packed inside luggage is a new concern and possible slow down at the security check for example. Internet links are provided throughout so that that you can check online for current travel regulations, sight seeing information, etc.

I loved this book! Armed with the tips from the author I'm feeling a bit less apprehensive about my first trip to a country where I don't speak the language. I've taken her advice about travel gear to purchase and bring along. There are things that I'd rather not learn the hard way and this book has first hand experience of how to avoid common problems of first timers to Italy. Thank you Ms. Hartwig. Please keep writing!

If you've never been to Italy, this is a great companion to take with you. I found it would help most when they journey into a country they know nothing about. Very well done.

Although the book had a few good tips it appears to have been written for Americans travelling. If I had known the book was written primarily for Americans I would not have purchased it. I come from New Zealand and I had to figure out what some things meant, it was a bit confusing. It also appears that American airlines are not as efficient as Air NZ or other airlines that fly out of NZ. Maybe I should write a book on travel for New Zealanders!

I've been to Italy once, many years ago, so in some ways I'm going to be a first timer on my next trip to Italy. I was eager to read Italy for First Timers by Lynnette Hartwig to see what advice she offered.Lynnette covers so much valuable information about travel in general that this would make an ideal book for any traveler to read, not just Italian-destination people. There's tips on packing. Tips on getting smoothly through airport security. Tips on navigating unknown subway systems. Tips on knowing how to get to your hotel. Tips how to deal best with blisters and sore feet.These tips don't just help you - they help others around you. Now you'll be prepared and won't be the person holding up the line for fifteen minutes while you undo something that had been done improperly.She both gives information where it's relevant and she directs you to other resources to get full details where necessary or where they might change. She gives detailed help on the popular tourist cities and also general information that will apply anywhere you happen to visit.I have some minor issues with it. The layout is sort of stream-of-consciousness with topics being brought up as they go. A look at the table of contents shows just a stream of titles like "time" and "bugs" and "the rule" which aren't always clear, and there aren't main sections to organize those into groups. If you're looking for help with something in particular it might not always be easy to find. Also, Lynnette advocates packing just a few tops and reusing them. When I travel, especially someplace hot like Italy, I have to pack extra tops, not fewer. So there are some tips that you'll need to adjust for your own body.Still, only a few quibbles in a dense book that is stuffed full of valuable content. Well recommended.I purchased this book with my own funds. I am acquainted with Lynnette; that being said, if you read my thousands of other reviews you'll see that I always post honest (sometimes quite critical) reviews, whether or not I have met the author :).
