The Witch's Book of Spirits, by Devin Hunter

Review

"Devin covers in depth an elusive side of witchcraft that few have explored in great practical detail...Devin presents the material in a very grounded, no-nonsense approach paired with an inherent sense of responsibility. His understanding of mediumship, conjuring, flying, and working with the spirit world displays the truth that he not only talks the talk, but also walks the walk."―Laura Tempest Zakroff, author of Sigil Witchery "The Witch's Book of Spirits is the most complete book on working with the dead ever written for Witches, but it's more than a manual for communicating with souls of the departed. It's also a guide to the worlds which generally lay just outside of our grasp and a thorough look at the beings that live there. I'd also like to add that it's just a damn fine book about witchcraft, filled with advice and some much-needed common sense."―Jason Mankey, author of The Witch's Book of Shadows "Teaching an art requires a delicate brew of guidance, cautions, and encouragement; Devin Hunter's book hits the right recipe. The Witch's Book of Spirits is a book that captures the author's personal vision and process while providing systems and frameworks that can serve the reader in developing their own way with the spirits."―Ivo Dominguez, Jr., author of Practical Astrology for Witches and Pagans "In this book Devin gives not just the rituals necessary to conjure and communicate with spirits, but the tools for building life with them. He uses a method of teaching that alternates between supplying theory and principals that can be applied by almost anyone, with very specific rituals that he has received from the spirits himself. The result is a text that you will return to over and over again whether you are working his rites or developing your own."―Jason Miller, author of The Sorcerer's Secrets

I originally ordered this book on kindle and just reordered another as hard copy to keep in my shop library! I have read both of Devin's books and find them to be informative and well written. As a practicing experienced witch who teaches the occult I can say this book is for people of all levels. I really love the exercises Devin includes in book such as meeting your spirit guides, & activating your third eye. He also include how to spiritually cleanse your home and recipes such as spiritual baths. This book has great info on mediumship that as a professional psychic medium I can really relate too!I highly recommend this book to all witches of all Levels!

Very good reading

Loved this book. Definitely not a 101 level piece of material- as someone who has been a pagan and magic worker for twenty years, I have read A LOT of the books out there and often when you've read one you've read then all. Devin presents his material in a straightforward way, with minimal frills or unnecessary drama. While I am still in the process of working through the material, the book itself has been an exceptional example of modern witchery. 10/10 would recommend to anyone wanting to move their magical life forward and out of the basics.

Loved it! Thanks for sharing your work and practice.

Enjoyable read.

Stars based on condition of book, not contents.

The information in Devin's book is going to be very helpful as I learn my way in the spirit world. I have been an untrained medium for years and his description of working with spirits rings true as to my own experience. I can tell that he is highly adept, with natural skill as well as training. I appreciate his guidance as to developing a more formal program for working with spirits. I really appreciated his assessment of earlier works done by the occult masters. I have looked through those texts, and did not want to dive into the other worlds I saw through those masters' eyes. I am glad that Devin was able and willing to wade through the dross and bring back the treasures of the old occult masters.Devin has a friendly, easy to read style. Others might mistake that for a lack of mastery of the material. Many professions want to create a language that is difficult for most to understand, mistaking linguistic gymnastics for a true understanding and mastery of the hidden worlds. I truly appreciate how Devin bridges the worlds of past occult writings and mysteries with modern traditions, and he is willing to walk us across that bridge.

I really loved all the information about the various types of spirits and how to work with them. This book was written by someone who knows so much about the different types of spirits and how to work with them. While I may not use all of the information, I appreciate its presence because there may come a time in my path when I want to. This book is definitely a keeper.

The Life and Times of Muhammad

Review

The only sound, comprehensive, and 'popular' work in English on the life, times, and people of the Prophet. (Kirkus)The best popular life of the Prophet of Islam available in the English language. An extraordinary accomplishment. (Los Angeles Times)Glubb's long acquaintance with the Arabs has enabled him to make sense out of obscure legends and to bring long-dead battles to life. His book stings like caravan dust and sweeps forward like a charge of Bedouin cavalry. (Newsweek)Glubb has written a history that is as fascinating to read as it is immediately and permanently valuable. (Cincinnati Enquirer)

Best book I've read about the history of Islam, who was Muhammad, what does Islam teach. It is for the curious and does not attempt to make converts.

The brilliant thing about this book is that it merges and yet distinguishes among the different sources of information we have about Mohammed's life. Thus, information from the Quran is very accurate, since it was written contemporaneously. The various biographies, histories and oral traditions are questionable because they were written down 100-200 or more years after Mohammed's death. This is very significant today, because the Quran makes it clear that Mohammed got along well with Jews and Christians, and even honored them for their devotion to the Scriptures. By contrast, the Islamic terrorists make their erroneous claims by referring to histories and traditions that were written down centuries after Mohammed's death, and reflect the writer's views rather than Mohammed's views. Glubb's book weaves all of these sources of information into a fascinating narration of Mohammed's life, but at the same time he indicates the source and validity of the various stories, especially the sensitive ones. That's what makes this book valuable today, since readers can read it and understand why the real infidels are the Muslims who call for jihads against Jews and Christians.

Sir John Glubb is uniquely qualified to write about Muhammad and the rise of the Arab peoples inasmuch as he lived most of his life as a desert-loving British officer leading the Arab Legion for the Kings of Jordan. Around the time that Israel was born, he took the fall for the increasing unpopularity of British forces from both sides -- Arab and Jew -- and was let go by the late King Hussein.Far from being embittered by the experience, Glubb went on to write a number of exciting histories, an autobiography, and this life of Muhammad. In a way, it is good that this book is over 30 years old: It is untouched by any reference to September 11 and allows the reader an unprejudiced view of the Prophet and his followers without rancour or prejudice of any sort. At one point, the author states that he is a Christian, but feels as completely at home with sincere Muslims as with his fellow Christians.Three features make this a particularly useful book. For one thing, there are a dozen excellent maps. For those of us who have difficulty distinguishing from Arabic name from another, there are summaries of Notable Dates and Personalities at the end of each chapter to help fix the facts in the reader's memory. Finally, there is a respectable bibliography for further study.I was particularly gratified with Glubb's final paragraph, which very much speaks to us today: "If we Christians believe that we are more nearly executing the will of God than are adherents of other religions, it must surely be our duty to lead such lives as will draw all men of good will to ask the reason for our goodness. To treat them with arrogant contempt is more likely to convince them that ours is an intolerant and hard-hearted way of life." To which I can only add, Amen!

Sir John Glubb is a no historian, but he wrote this book well. Again like said in my other reviews that such brief histories written on the life and time of Messenger of Allah (PBUH) are good only for the beginners. There are other author such as Watt and Armstrong who furnished such pieces. These are all for somebody who want to get some quick facts. Perhaps if you are to write a book report for college then sources such as these are sufficient. However, for the purpose of the serious research you need to look at more authentic sources that are from 900AD-1300AD. Sources such as those will should include Tabari, Ibn Ishaq, al-Bladhuri and Ibn Khaldun.

Sir John Glubb, who lived a long time in the middle-east and became proficient in the Arabic language, used original references to write this excellent book on the life of the prophet. The book is easy to read, informative and provide a broad understanding of the subject. Sir John is not a Moslem but he understand Moslems and Islam. He writes with the detached historian's perspective and interprets events with a fresh outlook.Enjoyable and highly recommended.

As a Moslem I have read several books on Islam and the Prophet Muhammad by non-Moslem authors. I usually found in them a lot of bias against Islam and his Prophet. But despite that Sir John Glubb was not a Moslem, he came very close to logic in the writing of this book. Perhaps the main reason was that he lived more than thirty years in the Middle East, and he used good references . I highly recommend this book for non-Moslem readers to correct their viewpoints on Islam and its Prophet.

This book is a rather orthodox and uninspiring work. Typical of western scholarship it has toed the line of the fundamentalist arm of modern Islam. Recent scholarship has failed to put forward a revisionist and invigorating analysis of the life of the prophet. Some scholars have already begun to unravel the myths that exist around Muhammad as scholars were able to do with Jesus over a hundred years ago.

Qur'an (3:54) - "And they (the disbelievers) schemed, and Allah schemed (against them): and Allah is the best of schemers." The Arabic word used here for scheme (or plot) is makara, which literally means deceit. If Allah is deceitful toward unbelievers, then there is little basis for denying that Muslims are allowed to do the same. (See also 8:30 and 10:21)
