I read this book every so often to my kids' martial arts classes. The book helps me teach the lesson that hard work pays off in the end.

A wonderful artist who was a perfectionist in all his pursuits. I think having a selection of his work is perfect for us.

So much fun. Beautiful. Really a great book for kids for an intro to martial arts, and for adults to remind them about the value of their practice.I love this book. The text! The illustrations! The entire project.

I sought this book out because I was looking for a book with a Chinese New Year's story. Yes, Crouching Tiger is a Chinese New Year's themed book with elements I didn't find in other books (like that in Chinatown New Year parades, there is a "cabbage boy" who holds a head of cabbage on a bamboo pole in front of the dragon in the parade) as well as the more traditional elements (the cleaning, a new haircut, traditional foods, etc.), while also engaging readers with Chinese martial arts (each page shows a different Tai Chi position) and beautiful illustrations. But, more than that, it's a book about a young boy learning that he is "Chinese as well as American," a very important lesson taught to him by a loving and faithful grandfather. I like this book because it addresses respect, culture, patience, understanding and generational thoughts in a simple and informative way for children. Nice illustrations, too.

Ming Da's grandfather comes to visit from China, and teaches him tai chi, then celebrates Chinese New Year with him. Ink and watercolor full-page illustrations, with drawings of tai chi moves. Might interest young boys who are Chinese, or those who are into martial arts. Ages 6-8.

I went to the same school as the author, starting around the time he graduated. It's unfortunate he doesn't name any names in the book, some people are recognizable and some are not. Some of the events he describes are familiar, and some have me scratching my head as they don't sound like the same school.I must be fortunate because during my time at sea I didn't experience nearly as many unsavory characters as the author did. But the stories are enjoyable and do give you a pretty good idea of life at sea during those days. It's not quite the wild west he describes anymore.

About the time the author of this book graduated from the California Maritime Academy I had a chance to spend a couple of weeks with two marine engineers who worked in the fleet of an oil company that hauled crude from Valdez Alaska to the company refineries on the West Coast. They were an interesting sort. Both of them had small farms in New England. Their work schedule gave them several weeks off between duty periods. So they could live on the East Coast but join the ships and go to work in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bellingham Washington or Valdez to start their next tour.But US born and licensed mariners are becoming a rare breed as the industry changes. And apparently the writer of this book left the industry after just a few years.

I can't recall reading a book that gives more details on the operations of tanker ships. The prose will not win any prizes but I enjoyed sailing with Mark up and down the west coast.Thousands of vessels sail the oceans and now I have an appreciation for what is involved in a type of commerce that we often take for granted.

Having been in Mark's division and graduating class, I can confirm that most of what he talked about regarding Academy life. T-AGOS and Tankers were also a part of my early years, making this memoir a Deja Vu of many shipboard experiences. Being Mark's age, I am amazed at the level detail he has for some of the events -- My first few ships are a blur today. As crazy as the 80's seemed, I miss those days and would take them back in a heart beat over today's overly regulated and sometimes micromanaged environment.

Mark did a good job of portraying the life of merchant mariner. My career began in the 1950's and included graduation from CMA in the early 1960's. Most merchant vessels at that time had crews numbering in the forties which created a somewhat different atmosphere on board. Even so, his description of individuals seemed not so different from the past. You could say that Mark's Memoir is an accurate description of a relatively small slice of the maritime industry and well worth reading. The last 30 years of my active seafaring career was as a harbor pilot in SW Alaska which gave me an overview of the industry as it progressed through the era described in Mark's memoir. The book included interesting details beyond most accounts of seafaring. Well done.

Couldn't put the book down, read it in one setting. Book easy to read and kept my attention. He is a good writer, the only comment I have is what did he do after his last trip? Is he still at sea?

I was raised in Vallejo, the site of the academy. I went to High School with a friend that went to the Maritime Academy. His description of academy life and life on board maritime freighter is very much as stated in the book.Good book. Must say that our time was much earlier. We graduated from Vallejo high school in 1955.

I really enjoyed this book. It brings to life what a difficult occupation merchant marine can be. Living in close proximity of with folks you really don't like can get old quick. This book was written well and was hard to put down. Thanks Mark! , one more thing, I know there's a lot of hard working folks doing a great job.

I have a great love of all things sword and have all my life. I study and practice HEMA as well as the resurgence of the Nordic fighting arts as they are being revived through study of the old sagas, that being said, I very much liked this book. True, be advised that it was WRITTEN for probably younger readers as an introduction to swords. The art work is where this book truly shines. The illustrations are all very well rendered and I enjoyed them very much. If you are looking for a book that depictions of swords then this book is for you. I am very glad I bought it and my five year old daughter loves me reading this book to her. Win, win situation there.

I've been looking for a book like this for ages. There are plenty of meseum-like books with photographs and the like, but there's something about a meticulously drawn and designed book like this that makes it so much better. There is a wealth of visual reference here, and more swords of more different types than I think I've found in any similar book. If I had one complaint, it would be that I wish there was just a bit more information about the swords depicted. That's hardly a big deal though, especially given than sources of further information are referenced throughout the book, and in a bibliography at the back.This book, as it is, is a work of art. I can't rate it highly enough. Now someone just needs to do an equivelent book (or books, more likely) about other ancient weapons (axes, clubs, maces, flails, polearms, etc.). And then one about armor and other battle dress.

A wonderful work done from the heart. A great primer for swords, both real and fantastical. The writing and illustration are both done with an extraordinary amount of passion and talent for the subject. A passion I can attest, was life long. I was childhood friends with the author and he was always drawing and imagining swords and weapons and devouring fantasy novels and games. His innate artistic and creative ability shines in this book and its companion; Fantasy: An Artist's Realm.

My 4 1/2 year old grandson is really interested in swords and armor. This book is probably meant for older kids or adults but he loves it! The details of the drawings are incredible and we especially like having the swords broken down into categories. I gave this to my grandson on a long train ride recently and it kept him interested for most of the trip. A beautiful book .

I have his Fantasy book too and love both! The illustrations are exquisite and the bits of writing are inspiring.

Love the art and lore. Mr. Boos will be missed.

Bought as a gift for my friend who part takes in medieval fairs. He has greatly enjoyed the entire book beginning to end.

I love this book. It gives a nice overview of all types of swords from all over the world, and through history. I learned facts I never knew and saw the pictures to go with it. This book is beautifully depicted with the sketches and paintings. Ben Boos is a true sword lover and artist. This book rocks!

My dad is a die hard Browns fan. But no secret, they're not the most skilled team in the NFL. This was given to him as a gag gift, definitely a hit! Anyone with a good sense of humor will enjoy this book.

I loved the concept when I ordered this. What I don’t like is the pictures to color are more elementary than a 1st grade coloring book. The book is very thin and for the price....well, it is pretty steep for what it is.I don’t know if it is the way it shipped or if the cover was bent and damaged prior.For the cost, I expected more pristine for gifting.

I didn’t know much about Vienna. This book was a good introduction into the history, culture and life of that famous city even though the book is to be used as a guide to those who plan to travel and spend time there. As a travel guide it services it purpose quite nicely.It highlights all the exciting, interesting and entertaining places as well as historical and cultural landmarks. From museums and galleries, theme parks to landmark structures to the oldest and most famous Viennese zoo, their coffee houses, music centers, ski resorts and many more. Good detailed description about accommodations, transportation and safety, eateries and show and performance centers as well as various clubs for those who wish to go out and about at nighttime. The information piqued my interest enough I’ve earmarked Vienna as one of the many Europeans cities I hope to visit someday.

I would love to go to Vienna. It seems to be a very beautiful country with great places to go and things to do. This guide tells you some of the most important things you need to know about Vienna if you're planning on visiting the city, in the book you'll find places to go, safety and transport information, expected price ranges for different services, what to eat in Vienna, and much more. My favorite part of the book was chapter 8: "Things you can only get in Vienna", I would love to go to Tiergarten Schonbrunn Zoo, which is the oldest zoo in the world! Good travel guide!

My boyfriend and I have been thinking of places to go on our next out-of-country trip for next year. Vienna is one of our options, and after reading this book, we have decided that Vienna will be our next destination. One thing I will definitely remember though, as I love saving money, is to book a taxi in advance as it can save us about 40 euros! Definitely recommend this book to others if you are determining where your next trip will be to!

Will have to add this to my bucket list. This was a very good informational book on the City of Vienna. I didn't know it was the 6th largest in the EU. The links to the attractions and low-cost hotels are a nice touch. I want to try the tap water there since it comes from the mountains and is supposedly better than bottled water.

Not enough information to qualify as a comprehensive guide. Obvious places that would appeal to visitors were omitted, while some obscure places were included. I think this was a book that highlighted the author's favorites, as it was apparent that the author was well acquainted with Vienna. Not a book for the first time visitor.
